WEYMOUTH: 1,000 facts for 1,000 days

MORE fascinating information about Dorset has emerged in the March round of  1,000 Facts for 1,000 Days.

This project was launched under Dorset’s Olympic brand as part of the countdown to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with one fact for every one of the 1,000 days leading up to the events.

Facts for this month includes Fact 143 from Roy Griffiths of Weymouth for March 22nd when there will be 858 days to go.

He revealed that the architect of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Sir Christopher Wren, was elected MP for Melcombe Regis, Weymouth, in 1702.

Another snippet comes from Stuart Morris of Portland who provides Fact 145 for March 24th when there will be 856 days to go.

He said that Brunel’s steamship Great Eastern was scheduled to operate from Portland across the Atlantic but in 1859 a funnel was blown off by an explosion. Brunel died while his huge ship was under repair in Portland Harbour.

St John’s Primary School, Weymouth, provided Fact 152 for March 31st when there will be 145 days to go by revealing that Dorset has examples of 85 per cent of all British mammals and 90 per cent of birds.
