10th March 2010WEYMOUTH: Work begins on new fire station
INITIAL work has started on a scheme to build Weymouth’s new fire station.
Chain saws were used to remove a hedge fronting the site off Radipole Lane which used to be the former Westhaven school.
Building materials have also been brought on to the site which will be transformed into a state of the art new fire station in just over a year’s time.
The new building will include public educational resources, community safety facilities and meeting rooms.
Materials from the demolition of the old school will be used to help build the new fire station which will also include a community centre aimed at giving health and fire safety training and advice to residents.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Nigel Williams said: “The new community fire station will enable our hard working teams to focus on local community safety issues and educational work to complement this.
“With the 2012 Olympics moving ever closer, we can be assured that we will be in the best position as possible to support this on a local level and we are delighted that work has started on this scheme.”
