LYME REGIS: History of Lyme in ten objects

Lyme Regis Museum has been inspired by the British Museum/BBC project “A History of the World in 100 Objects” to put together its own a fascinating series of new talks.

Based on ten objects that tell story of the town, the talks, under the banner of “A History of Lyme Regis in Ten Objects”, will start next Wednesday (March 17th) at 2.30pm.

The museum already has a unique artefact from its collection included in Dorset’s top ten objects for the “A History of the World” project. It’s a small tool used to extract fossils which belonged to Mary Anning (1799-1847), the self-educated working class woman from Lyme Regis who became the greatest fossil hunter ever known.

The new programme of talks will highlight many other human stories, using a selection of historic objects including a grandfather clock, a cannon ball, the town curfew bell and a Tudor rent table.

All the objects tell their own special story about the history of the town and its people.

For more information contact the museum on 01297 443370 or by email: info@lymeregismuseum.co.uk or visit the website www.lymeregismuseum.org.uk.
