10th March 2010LYME REGIS: Share your garden
ENVIRONMENTAL group Turn Lyme Green is launching a garden sharing scheme.
The initiative will be launched at a public meeting in the Marine Theatre on Tuesday (March 16th) at 7.30 pm.
A statement from Turn Lyme Green acknowledges that there been such keen interest in growing your own veg since World War Two.
“People who have never even grown weeds are game to have a go, but the waiting list for allotments is long – even with the addition of new plots at Strawberry Fields,” said the TLG sppkesperson.
“It’s a shame that not everyone who would like to give their green thumb a workout has the space to do so, but happily there is a solution at hand.
“In Lyme Regis it seems there are nearly as many people willing to share their garden as there are people looking for a bit of land – they just haven’t met each other yet.
“So on Tuesday Turn Lyme Green will be playing Cupid - if you are looking for a bit of land or are willing to share some of your garden come along and find out what it’s all about.
“Some people have a veg garden that is now too big for their needs or that they can no longer keep up with. Others have simply got a big garden that they are happy to share. On the other side of the fence are both keen and beginner gardeners – some want just a small patch to make a start, others will be looking for an allotment-sized plot to meet most of their household’s veg needs.”
Turn Lyme Green is also keen to recruit anyone who is willing to mentor a new gardener.
“If you’ve got the time and experience to help a new gardener learn when and what to dig, sow, weed and harvest in Lyme’s microclimate then join us on Tuesday.
“Your trainees might want a hanging basket of cherry tomatoes and a window box of herbs, or they might want to grow potatoes for a family of eight – either way the good advice of an experienced local gardener will be green gold.”
