10th March 2010DORCHESTER: Police praise quick thinking teen
by Paul Crompton
DORCHESTER mum has spoken of the pride for her quick thinking teenage son who helped capture a burglar who terrorised their home.
Hiding in fear, Ollie Lomax, 14, first called his mother and then the police from beneath his bed as Weymouth man Jason Lee Baccus broke into the family’s home.
Brave Ollie is being praised for his quick-thinking actions, which saw police catch unemployed Mr Baccus.
Mr Baccus, 34, was convicted last week at Bournemouth Crown Court of the burglary at the detached house in Treves Road, Dorchester.
He was sentenced to two years in prison for that burglary, as well as 38 other burglary offences committed in the Weymouth and Bournemouth areas.
Ollie’s mother, Sarah Lomax, said: “Your home is supposed to be your safe space so when it is invaded by someone who has no right to be there, the effects and trauma on everyone involved lasts a long time.
“It is devastating as a parent to know that your child is in that safe space with a burglar – the possibilities do not bear thinking about.
“I would like to thank the Dorchester and Weymouth police for their fantastic support and help for Ollie and myself during and since this traumatic event.”
At around 5:20pm on Friday, February 26th Ollie heard a knock at the front door just before hearing the sound of the back door being forced open.
The Thomas Hardye School pupil hid as the burglar searched the kitchen and then the bedrooms upstairs. He did not enter Ollie’s bedroom.
Thanks to the call police were at the family home within four minutes and within six minutes of that call, police had arrested Mr Baccus on suspicion of the burglary in nearby Queens Avenue.
A number of electronic items were stolen including an Acer laptop computer, a Sony E-book, and an iPod as well as jewellery – rings, bracelets and necklaces.
The Acer computer notebook was later recovered in one of the rear gardens in Queen’s Road, Dorchester.
Inspector Les Fry, section commander for Dorchester and Sherborne police, said: “Due to Ollie’s quick thinking and bravery in making the phone calls, a professional burglar – a prolific career criminal – was captured red handed.
“Ollie did what we would ask all witnesses to any crime to do and that is to immediately call the police and not get directly involved or tackle an offender.
“Ollie is a very brave and sensible lad and his parents should be very proud of him.”
