26th February 2010WEYMOUTH: Half term fun at Lorton Meadows
by Harry Walton
LIVE pictures of a barn owl entertained children at Lorton Meadows Wildlife Centre in Weymouth.
The centre was staging a half term Caterpillar Kids event focusing on nesting birds.
People and wildlife officer Sam Dollimore said the event got children to think about birds building nests, how they built them, where they built them and what materials were used.
She added: “Children were able to go outside and build a nestbox themselves to get them thinking about locations.”
Cameras in the Centre showed not just a roosting barn owl but other sites as well from a kestrel nestbox to a bird feeding area and a small nest box in another location.
Sam said: “It was an excellent day, the weather was with us and everyone really enjoyed themselves.”
In another event children were able to look for animal tracks or the signs they leave behind such as fur on fences. They also joined in a scavenger hunt in the woods to collect items to make a collage.
