PERRY STREET LEAGUE - DORSET FOOTBALL: Two off at Beaminster

Lyme to face Petherton in semi-final

by Howard Larcombe

SOMERSET INTERMEDIATE CUP

Round Four

FORTON Rangers crashed out of the Somerset Intermediate cup when they effectively ran out of time in the tie against visiting Bridgwater Sports.

A disastrous first-half left the Rangers trailing 4-1. But a spirited second 45 showing fell just short as they went down 5-4. The hosts’ goals were shared between John Smith, Tom Robinson, Lee Richardson and Dave Fowler.

The all PSL clash at the Rec’ saw Ilminster Colts edge past West & Middle Chinnock 4-3. The tie ended all square at 3-3 at full-time and was finally decided by Craig Stuckey’s second of the afternoon.

Andy Fish also bagged a brace for the Blues who earned a home tie in the last eight. Earlier The Chinnocks recovered from going two behind to lead 3-2 through Ian Masters, Mark Cawley and an own goal.

CHALLENGE CUP

Quarter Finals

SOUTH Petherton were given a free ticket to the semi-finals after off the fields problems resulted in Perry Street failing to raise a team for the quarter-final tie.

Petherton’s opponents will be Lyme Regis in what promises to be a mouth-watering semi on March 6th. The Seasiders booked their place after a full-blooded 2-1 win at Beaminster. There wasn’t too much between the sides but Lyme just about deserved their win.

Beaminster felt they had earned a fifth minute penalty after Lyme keeper Ashley Caddy appeared to clip Beaminster skipper Murray Legg. But referee Chris Vowles, who had a difficult afternoon, waved away the Rainbows’ claims.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Dom Rowe found Julien Simier and the Frenchman gave Lyme the lead with his seventh goal of the season.

The second-half saw he hosts wrestle the initiative and Legg surged in from the right flank to slot home the leveler four minutes after the restart to move his personal tally up to 19.

Beaminster now enjoyed most of the territorial advantage without carving out too many clear-cut chances and they were punished in the 79th minute when Simier linked well with strike partner Joe Bond and the youngster clipped home what proved to be the winner.

Worse was to follow for Beaminster moments later as Sam Crocker received his second yellow card and headed off for an early shower in the impressive new pavilion at the Memorial Ground.

Crocker was accompanied by Legg who was red-carded after the final whistle and could now miss crucial games in the congested run-in to the season finale.

Lyme manager Robin Townsend was impressed by the work rate of midfielder Lee Cleal, he said: “It’s only Lee’s fifth outfield game for three years or so but he did well” whilst Rainbows’ manager Paddy Ford selected centre-back Paul Fellows as his MoM.

PREMIER DIVISION

GOALS from Chris Derryman, Barry Hayne and Pete Symes earned three points, and a league double for Merriott Rovers from their mid-table trip to Combe Reserves.

A 3-2 win for Crewkerne Town looks to have banished any fears of the reigning League Champions ending up being relegated. Lee Banks and a Jamie Spurdle penalty gave the Tigers a 2-1 interval lead.

Banks struck again, his seventh goal in seven outings since returning to Henhayes from Merriott, midway through the second-half with Missy’ striker Paul Gold’s penalty miss proving crucial.

Ilminster Reserves’ boss Jamie Lee felt that Charmouth looked a far better side than their lowly League position indicated. But the Blues, still unbeaten in 2010, had far too much in the tank for the Robins and cruised to a 5-1 victory. Simon Manley (2), Kenny Timson, Paul Retter and Chris Bussel scored the hosts with Shaun Meyers replying with his 11th of the season.

White Horse are still seeking an increasing elusive win. Ian Pincombe’s side seemed to be well on their way as they recovered from two down against Barrington at Symondsbury to level through James Pitcher and Man-of-the-Match John Kingstone. Kingstone then hit the crossbar with a free-kick and Horse’s chance had bolted as Craig Steel notched the visitors’ notched an 86th minute winner to complete his hat-trick.

DIVISION ONE

A 5-1 win at Chard Rangers saw Netherbury climb a place to fourth. Lee Seymour gave the Rangers an early lead but the Ambers didn’t panic and Dan Rawlings equalised before half-time.

The second period was a one-sided affair with the visitors purring home with strikes from Adam Sorrell, Phil Hussey (2), and James Sayers. “We could have had 12” said Netherbury manager Andy Loudon who felt Hussey’s second, a stunning 25-yard volley, was a Goal of the Season contender.

The relegation tussle took a couple more twists and turns. Lyme Regis Reserves troubles continued as they threw away a 3-1 half-time lead to go down 6-4 against fellow-strugglers Perry Street Reserves at the Davey Fort. First-half strikes from Fred Thomson, Ryan Fifer and Gerard Hitchcock put the Seasiders in control.

But six unanswered goals from Kris Grove (2), Liam Riste (2), Jamie Best and Kev Rowson gave the Mothers three valuable points with Thomson’s second a mere consolation.

There was a also a six-pointer at St Mary’s where Pymore’s resurgence continued with a 1-0 win over struggling Thorncombe. Leigh Hansford’s third goal in as many games, this time from the penalty spot following a foul on Alex Goodrick proved decisive as the teams swapped places at the wrong end of the table. The Thorns who felt the award of the penalty was harsh gave top marks to Rich Gorst.

DIVISION TWO

MILLWEY Rise maintained their 10-point lead at the top of the Division with a convincing 5-0 win at Chard United. A fine free-kick from Player-manager Shane Featherstone saw Rise head into the break one up. It was a one-way traffic after the restart with doubles from Man-of-the-Match Callum Garrett and Peter Hoare.

The midtable clash between Hinton and Beaminster Reserves ended honours even as the teams shared four goals. Visiting Beaminster took the first-half plaudits and led through a Dan Pyett double.

But the Saints earned a point thanks to goals from Stacey Hawes (pen) with his fourth in three games, and Jamie Laver.

There looked to be a shock on the cards as Drimpton took a two goal lead through Andy Birch and Dan Legg at promotion chasing Norton Athletic. But Norts recovered and stormed back with goals from top-scorer Paul Churchill (2), Ashley Rose (2) and Nolan White.

There was a surprise at Venlake where Uplyme landed their first win the first week of October with a superb 2-1 triumph over Dowlish & Donyatt. A finger injury sustained on his round by postman Lloyd Cleal forced manager Rodney Rowe to hand the goalkeeping gloves to 16-year-old Kieran White and the youngster did well.

Midfield schemer Lee Mears gave the visitors a slender half-time lead. But the Swallows sensed a chance and Alex Cottle, in his first game since returning from a long injury lay-off, leveled before Gavin Fowler bagged the 80th minute all-important winner that sees Uplyme jump two places off the foot of the table.

Shepton Beauchamp led through goals from Dan Smith and Rich Pippen at South Petherton Reserves. But Pethy snatched a point with replies from Andy Moody (pen) and Joe Humphries.

DIVISION THREE

HOME wins Fivehead United and Crewkerne Rangers keeps the promotion race wide open.

Fivehead had few problems in beating Chard Rangers Reserves 3-0 but it was a different story at Wadham School where Luso-Chard took Crewkerne Rangers all the way before going down 3-2.

Adam Tanner, Josh Lovatt and Harvey Perrin on target for the hosts. Marco Quedas and Pedro Teixeira replied for Luso.

Combe A failed to find the net for the fourth time in five outings but were pleased to end with a point after surrendering much of the possession to Misterton Reserves in a 0-0 draw at Slades Cross.

DIVISION FOUR

ON A day when the top three were all beaten a lack of players is beginning to cost Waytown Hounds dearly.

The West Dorset side slipped to a 3-1 home defeat against Hinton Reserves at Netherbury.

Man-of-the-Match Adam George, Ross Jewell and Steve Holton scored for the Saints with Tom Menaldino replying.

Ilminster A have muscled into the promotion race after a superb 5-4 win at leaders Winsham United Reserves. Tom Wallis (2), Wayne Crocker, Jon Brister and Luke Lazenby (pen) scored for the Blues with Ashley Doble, Richard White, Paul Stuart and an own goal making up the Winsh quartet.

Jamie Park and Simon Dobbs scored the goals as Barrington Reserves surprised Farway United Reserves with a 2-1 win at Shelway Lane.

Meanwhile at the other end of the table Hawkchurch Reserves, with midfielder Dan Morley in fine form, secured a League double and leap-frogged over Charmouth Reserves after Jake Bearpark scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Barrs Lane.

The Robins were no doubt missing veteran Jerry Bearpark who was donning a dress in the excellent ‘Summer Holiday’ stage production in Axminster!
