24th February 2010New exhibition at Dorset County Museum
A NEW exhibition opens at Dorset County Museum this Saturday (February 27th) entitled Dorset Footprint. It showcases recent works by Dutch artist Peter Ursem and runs until April 24th.
Peter was born in the Netherlands and graduated in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.
Since moving to England in 1999 he has won wide acclaim with distinctive woodcuts, lino cuts and wood engravings of the Dorset landscape.
He was awarded Arts Council grants for ‘Reflections, a book of woodcuts of the river Stour’ (2001) and ‘Intimate Space, Artist Face’ (2005), exploring in poetry and woodcuts the motifs of eight Dorset artists.
Dorset Footprint depicts the landscape as seen on foot, finding that whilst as an artist he may look to leave his mark in the world, undeniably the Dorset landscape has left its impression in his work and being. Many of the works are for sale and entry is free.
To complement the exhibition, Peter is also running two workshop events. The first, on Wednesday April 7th, is suitable for children aged 4 years and older and costs £3 per child.
Entitled ‘Bumblebee Celebrates his Birthday’ it will present an imaginative drawing and painting workshop for children (and their parents or carers) to create an original animal story book. Two sessions are available: 10 – 11.30am and 2 – 3.30pm.
The second event, Pressing On, is in the form of a master class and will be held on Thursday April 15th between 11am and 3pm. Peter will demonstrate how to create and print contemporary relief prints using the Reynolds Stone hand press in the Museum. Everyone is welcome to this free event.
