24th February 2010LYME REGIS FOOTBALL: Super Js take Seasiders through to semi-finals
by Howard Larcombe
A GOAL apiece from the strike-pairing of Julien Simier and Joe Bond saw Lyme Regis through to the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup after a stormy quarter-final in front of the impressive new Sports Pavilion at Beaminster's Memorial Ground.
Beaminster finished the afternoon depleted with Sam Crocker sent-off 10 minutes from time and also had skipper Murray Legg red-carded for comments made to referee Chris Vowles after the final whistle. Vowles, who had difficult afternoon, was also at the centre of two disputed penalty shouts - one for each team - and denied Bond an apparently good second goal.
All-in-all anybody who watched the game will have witnessed a good old fashioned local-derby and seen that there is very little between these old West Dorset rivals with Lyme just about deserving of their win which has set-up a clash with South Petherton at Lightgate Gate Lane with the South Petherton.
This weekend Lyme travel to neighbours Charmouth who remain rock bottom after a 5-1 defeat at Ilminster Town Reserves.
Lyme Manager Robin Townsend will be without the services of wing-back Dave Robinson who is off to Australia for 10 weeks and Lee Cleal who has decided to return to the goalkeeping duties with Bridport - however, Ben Whittington returns to the squad.
There was morale-boosting afternoon at Venlake for Uplyme who collected three priceless points in their battle to avoid the Division Two relegation zone. Alex Cottle and Gavin Fowler scored the goals which earned a 2-1 win over high-flying Dowlish & Donyatt. Manager Rodney Rowe takes his side off to face Beaminster Reserves on Saturday.
Lyme Reserves remain rooted to the foot of the Division One table after blowing a 3-1 lead against fellow strugglers Perry Street Reserves.
The Seasiders, who eventually crashed 6-4, take a break from their Divsion One worries and avert their attention to the Arthur Gage Cup and a quarter-final with in-form Ilminster Colts at the Davey Fort. Lyme Bantams entertain Division Three promotion chasing Misterton Reserves at Venlake.
Charmouth Reserves returned to the bottom of the Division Four table after going down 2-0 at home to Hawkchurch Reserves. New boss Toby Gordon will be hoping for better when his squad travel to Thorncombe Reserves at the weekend.
