PERRY STREET LEAGUE - SOMERSET FOOTBALL: Tigers and Blues in semis

Combe Reserves end barren run

CHALLENGE CUP

Quarter Finals

CREWKERNE Town, last season's runner-up, saw their recent up-turn in form end with a 3-1 defeat by Ilminster Town Reserves at Henhayes.

It looked good for the Tigers when Dan McCreadie gave them a fourth minute lead but strikes from Scott Jennings and Charlie Rutter gave the Blues the initiative at the interval.

An second-half own goal summed up an abject Crewkerne performance that new boss Nick Murphy described as "awful."

Goals either side of the break were decisive as Merriott Rovers edged past visiting Misterton. Gavin Charles gave the Rovers the lead in 44th minute, a lead which Chris Welch doubled three minutes after the restart. Paul Gold netted his 11th of the season for Missy but it wasn't enough as the hosts secured a semi-final slot.

The ties at Beaminster and Perry Street were both postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

ARTHUR GAGE CUP

Quarter Finals

THE Quarter-final tie at Oxleaze went with form as cup holders Pymore were put to the sword by hosts West & Middle Chinnock.

The Chinnocks extended their unbeaten run to 10 games with a 6-1 demolition of their struggling visitors. Mark Cawley led the way with a fine hat-trick - his third of the season, Ian Masters bagged a double to take his tally for the season to 20 and there was a single for Simon Hebditch. Leigh Hansford tucked away a penalty for Pymore to give his team hope at 3-1 but there was no way back as hosts cruised through.

There was a closer match at Horseshoe Lane where visitors Netherbury emerged on top after a topsy-turvy 3-2 win.

A James Sayers strike gave the Ambers  a slender half-time lead. Sayers should really have added to the lead as his went on to squander two one-on-one opportunities.

The Thorns fought back and Brian Tillotson lashed home from the edge of the box. There was better to follow for the hosts when Lee fisher curled home a superb free-kick that impressed both managers following a foul on Stuart Bicknell.

But there was more drama to follow as Ryan Gay headed home  a corner to level and Sayers struck his 10th of the season in the 90th minute. A waterlogged Davey Fort forced the cancellation of the Lyme Regis Reserves v Ilminster Colts tie.

JACK VENN CUP

Quarter Finals

MILLWEY Rise, five time winners, continued their fine form in the Jack Venn cup with a good 2-1 over Norton Athletic.

With Millwey's First Avenue Ground unplayable both teams agreed to switch the tie to Norton.

This didn't deter Rise and two goals in the lead up to the break won the match. First Matt Hall broke the deadlock in the 40th minute then his uncle Ian bagged the second three minutes later.

Norton pulled one back in the 70th minute when Neil Rusling's effort was deflected home by Matt Hall. Millwey manager Shane Featherstone had a mention for 16-year-old Alex Rockett who came off the bench for a useful 30-minute first team debut.

BILL BAILEY CUP

Quarter Finals

CREWKERNE Rangers look to be cup favourites after a 2-1 win over Shepton Beauchamp Reserves at Wadham School.

An own goal gave Rangers an early lead before Rich Pippen levelled. But Rangers edged home when Tom Fussell slotted a 75th minute winner. Rangers opponents in the semi-final will be last year's runners-up Chard Rangers Reserves who surprised Lyme Regis Bantams with a fine 4-2 win at Jocelyn Park. Mike Bagg put the Rangers ahead in the 13th minute after the boggy under foot conditions deceived Lyme keeper Jim Larcombe.

Bagg missed a one-on-one chance ten minutes later and the hosts were punished on the half-hour when Ben Strong lashed home a fierce angled drive that gave Lee Hutchings in the Rangers goal no chance, and Strong his sixth goal in five games.

John Mason restored the lead with a composed finish at the far post on 57 minutes but back came the Bantams and Rhys Paterson levelled for the second time two minutes later. The tie appeared to heading for 30 extra minutes on the energy sapping surface when Mason clipped home his second from 25 yards.

The tie was settled on the full-time whistle when Dan Wilcox's cross somewhat fortunately drifted high into the net.  Midfielder Simon Mason took the Rangers plaudits with Larcombe making four top drawer saves for the visitors.

Semi-final draw: Crewkerne Rangers v Chard Rangers Reserves and Fivehead United v Crewkerne Town Reserves.

PREMIER DIVISION

COMBE Reserves jumped two places to fifth with a 2-1 win over White Horse. The teams went into the game with just a solitary win between them in their last 15 outings.

Tom Shire smashed home a 30-yard cracker into the top corner as the teams ended the first 45 all-square. The destination of the three points was decided by Dan Harvey who converted Ryan Parris' pinpoint cross.

First-half goals from Adam Gribble and Craig Steer saw fourth-placed Barrington squeeze past Charmouth at Shelway Lane. Guy Dare also had a spot-kick well saved before the interval.

DIVISION ONE

MERRIOTT Rovers Reserves remain in top spot despite going down 3-2 at Forton Rangers who climb a place to third. Rovers led twice - firstly through Chris Derryman and then Matt Bisgrove but the hosts continued their good form in 2010 with strikes from Steve Baker (2) and Alex Thompson.

DIVISION TWO

SOUTH Petherton Reserves were held to  a 2-2 draw by Beaminster Reserves at Lightgate Lane.

Mark Padfield gave Pethy the lead but Matt Tolman ensured the teams headed into the oranges all-square. Adrian Farrell restored the lead only for Tom Cowie to head home a second leveller.

Shepton Beauchamp Reserves climbed two places to third after a 3-1 win over visiting Forton Reserves.

DIVISION THREE

IT WAS a good day for Fivehead United. A first-half Simon Harding goal against his old team gave United a superb 1-0 win in a game of few chances at table-topping Hawkchurch.

Meanwhile Fivehead's promotion rivals Misterton Reserves lost their six-game unbeaten record in the derby-day defeat by visiting Crewkerne Town Reserves.

Aaron Hodges (2), Grant Symes were on target for the Tigers with Dean Hyet's seventh of the season counting for little. Combe A found the net for the first time in four games.

The Saints actually struck three times through player-manager Gary Biss (2) and Marcus Summerhayes but still ended up empty-handed as they went down 4-3 at Forton against Luso-Chard.

DIVISION FOUR

LOWLY Charmouth Reserves stunned Barrington Reserves winning 3-1 at Barrs Lane. Paul Lewis scored the visitors consolation.

The top of the table clash at Bakers Field saw Farway United Reserves and Winsham United trade nine goals. Winsh led twice before eventually going down 6-3 to the Devonians. Vinny Allen (2) and Shaun Read were on target for the hosts.

Mark Pearce and Ross Jewell scored the goals as Hinton Reserves beat Thorncombe Reserves 2-1. Tony Bartlett scored and was then sent-off for the Thorns.

A Dan O'Connor goal at Slades Cross couldn't save Combe from a 4-1 defeat against Chard United Reserves. Chard's goals were shared between Ricky Anderson, Stefan Coombes, Rob Milsom and Kristian Rockett.

Finally Ilminster A had goals from Luke Woodard (2), Carl Lazenby, Wayne Crocker and Josh House to thanks for a 5-4 win over battling Hawkchurch Reserves.
