10th February 2010REVIEW: Tavaziva Dance’s Wild Dog
Bridport Arts Centre
Saturday, February 6th
WILD Dog was an expressive dynamic dance piece performed by Tavaziva. The dancers bounded onto the stage springing along with an anamalistic rhythm.
There was a sense of competition, aggression, threat and playfulness in their movements and the dancers moved in a way that portrayed inquisitive wolf like creatures, very aware of their environment through super keen acute senses.
Their costumes looked urban and earthy suggesting wildness or pack animals. The chorogeography was stunning and imaginative.
The shapes the dancers created were tangled, arched, twisted and awkward but very precise and clear. The music began as rain fall, creating a calm tropical feel, changing into contemporary eerie sounds while tribal singing and African rhythms rang throughout the piece. All the dancers were strong and athletic showing great control and rhythm in their movements.
The dance showed predators and prey, hunger and need, fighting and competition with beautiful gentleness portrayed as well. Wild Dog was enormously energetic with beautiful leaps and moves. This is a wonderful, inventive dance company with astonishing dancers and extraordinary choreography.
