WEYMOUTH: Martin's fond farewell

by Harry Walton

A STYLISH piece of Weymouth history come to an end with the retirement of salon owner Martin Powell.

He ran Martin’s Hair Boutique in Franchise Street for 32 years but has closed his doors for the last time after deciding to retire.

His premises have seen many changes since he opened them in 1978 when Abba were number one with Take A Chance On Me.

Customers were happy to take a chance with Martin and his trade grew steadily.

He said: “Chapelhay then had a lot more shops and it was quite a thriving little area, but we’ve lost quite a few places and there is no passing trade now.

“But some things remain the same and the bob, which was very popular in 1978, remains popular today.

“Chemicals we use have changed greatly and they make life a lot easier while technology has also moved on and made what I do a lot simpler.

“I now hope to relax more in retirement and enjoy walking my dogs.”

Martin paid tribute to his key staff including head stylist Janice Crabb and stylists Carole Sutton and Miriam Avant who he said had been an important part of his business, adding that it is hoped that the site will continue as a salon.
