13th January 2010WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND: Free library service for the housebound
DORSET Library Service wants to hear from housebound Weymouth and Portland residents who would like free book deliveries to their home.
The borough has a good spread of libraries with a main branch in Weymouth town centre as well as others in Chickerell, Wyke Regis, Littlemoor and two on Portland, but for some people a trip out to pick up a book is just not possible.
The home delivery service is available thanks to a partnership between Dorset County Council’s Library Service and the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).
They were one of a number of teams jointly recognised for Team of the Year at the Volunteer Centre Dorset Awards 2009.
Books are chosen to suit the taste of individual readers while large print and talking books are available and titles can also be ordered on request.
People using the service could even be a carer for someone else because that has affected their ability to visit a library.
More than 200 dedicated volunteers already visit around 1,500 housebound people across the county but new customers and volunteers are always welcome.
Anyone interested in the service can call 01305 225000 or email dorsetlibraries@dorsetcc.gov.uk to find out more.
People can also drop into their local library to discuss the needs of a friend or family member who wants to use the service.
More information can be found in the ‘Libraries for everyone’ section of www.dorsetforyou.com/libraries
