13th January 2010BEAMINSTER: Huge welcome for hunt
THE Cattistock Hunt visited Beaminster for the first time in its history on Boxing Day.
Members of the hunt were delighted to be welcomed into Beaminster and it was the first time the hounds had met in a town for over ten seasons.
Beaminster Town Council hailed the event as a great success with a crowd of over 1,000 turning out to see the hounds and huntsmen.
With around 80 riders waiting for the off, Huntsman Charlie Watts led the way at 11.15am followed by the field who spent a busy day at Beaminster Down.
Joint Huntmaster Liz Elliot said: “Everyone was extremely pleased with how the meet went and to be welcomed by such a large and enthusiastic crowd.
“Mat Folas and his staff at the Wild Garlic produced a splendid ‘stirrup cup’ of hot soup, mini toad-in-the-hole and brownies for the 80 riders present.
“The Joint Masters are very grateful for all the support shown by the local landowners, Beaminster Town Council, WDDC and Beaminster Police.”
Beaminster Town Council Chairman Isabelle Maling added: “I think the event went exceedingly well and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
“I know that not everyone supports the hunt but I think everyone agreed it was a very good event for Beaminster and I hope they come again.”
