7th January 2010ILMINSTER: Christmas cracker for Ilminster pensioners
BRIGHT sunshine greeted Ilminster pensioners on the day of their annual Christmas lunch held on the first Saturday of January at the Shrubbery Hotel.
A large group of volunteers co-ordinated the event, headed for the first time this year by Angel Clapp from Baker and Duke Solicitors.
Ilminster Rotarians, Lions and Masons all pitched in to transport, greet and serve the guests for the day, who enjoyed a three course meal with live entertainment from Barry Paull as Elvis, The Serenaders and country band the Double G’s. Following the entertainment and raffle they had tea and mince pies before being taken home with a goodie bag for later.
The Mayor, Councillor Margaret Excell and consort John Excell joined the diners for their Christmas cracker and praised the hard work that went on behind the scenes. The town council contributed £500 to the lunch along with donations from the Ilminster Lions, Rotary Club of Ilminster and the Nyanza Lodge.
Many of the diners had been enjoying the event for several years and thought it was a wonderful treat and much appreciated, especially for those who lived alone but the clubs feel there are still people out there they would like to reach.
Rotarian Tony walker said: “There must be other people out there, particularly lonely people, who we just don’t know they can come here for free, and we would love them to come forward. I think it is really important, especially with so many who do not have family around them at this time of year.”
