7th January 2010CHARD: Plans for 54 new homes
By Roxanne Cameron
EXCITING plans for a new 54 home development scheme in Chard have been submitted to South Somerset District Council.
The proposed development, sited at the rear of the former Chard Joint Station in Great Western Road, will be built by Yarlington Housing Group.
A total of 14 two-bedroom flats, six one-bedroom flats, 11 two-bedroom homes, 18 three-bedroom homes and three four-bedroom homes look set to be built, should the application be accepted.
Yarlington Housing Group is one of the leading affordable housing providers in Somerset with more than 8,000 properties covering South Somerset.
Yarlington are working in conjunction with Boon Brown architects and local building firm Brookvale Homes of Yeovil.
Boon Brown property consultant, Shaun Travers commented on the project, which will be his first working with Yarlington in Chard.
He said: “I am looking forward to providing much needed affordable housing in Chard.”
Great Western Road is a site known by residents and the police as a fly tipping spot and an area where anti-social behaviour takes place.
However, the proposal has met some opposition with one resident stating his objection to the increase of traffic the development would cause.
They said: “I am satisfied except for the increase of traffic at the junction of Great Western Road and Victoria Avenue due to the speed of traffic and roadside parking in Victoria Avenue, already a problem.”
A full consultation has taken place with the Highways Authority and Natural England with regards to traffic and wildlife issues.
The homes promise to meet the high standards of all Yarlington Housing Group’s developments.
Chris Bartlett, Principal Controller of Development Operations said: “We believe that this scheme will improve an area that has been misused.
“Yarlington Housing Group prides themselves on working with communities and by forging strong partnerships Yarlington Housing Group has a commitment to continue to develop affordable, quality homes over the next decade.
“By being accountable and efficient, using innovation and open dialogue Yarlington Housing Group is rapidly enhancing its reputation as the partner of choice.
“All new homes are built to exceptionally high standards and provide much needed additional affordable homes for local people.”
