BEER: Flower show ‘best ever’

Members of Beer Horticultural Society named this year’s flower show ‘the best ever’ after entries were on the up and the community turned out in full force to show their support.

From floral displays to vegetables, crafts and baked treats, villagers helped toward a total of 506 exhibits, the highest amount in many years.

Regulars to the show once again shone, with dedicated show supporter, John Lang, picking up four prizes and Vic Bartlett scooping four awards for his entries.

Younger villagers also pledged their support with more children’s entries than in previous years and an overall positive involvement for all classes in the competition.

Whilst trophies and gifts were handed out for the competition winners, Beer Horticultural Society’s local ‘Beer in Bloom’ awards were also handed out.

Chairman of the horticultural society, Ursula Makepeace, commented: “Beer Flower Show was a resounding success all round and it was the biggest show since I took over the horticultural society in 1995.

“A total of approximately 220 people visited the show which also turned out to be an enjoyable social event.

“A lot of people who do not see each other regularly had a chance to have ‘a good old chat’.

“We had 506 exhibits. All classes were well represented and we are particularly pleased that many more children participated than in previous years. We hope that this is a good omen for next year.”
