AXMINSTER: New councillor pledges to fight for young people

By Philip Evans

AXMINSTER’S newest councillor has vowed to fight for jobs and homes for the town’s young people.

Co-opted onto Axminater Town Council on Monday evening was 42-year-old Ian Hall.

Mr Hall, a father of two young children, fills the vacancy in the Weycroft Ward caused by the resignation of Tracey Huntley, who served on the council for about ten years.

The vacancy was filled by co-option as the requesite number of electorate failed to call for an election.

Two other candidates also put themselves forward - Nick Matthews, a photographer from Willhayes Park, and Patricia Rous, who lives in First Avenue.

Mr Hall, who lives in Cawley Avenue, has been a resident of Millwey Rise for 39 years.  He works as a factory operative at Numatic in Chard.

He and his wife Maria have taken a close ineterest in the community affairs of Axminster, especially in the sporting field.

Mr Hall became a committee member at Axminster Football when he was just 17 years-old.  He went on to help run the youth sides at Sector Lane and in more recent years has been crucially involved in the development of Millwey Rise Football Club and their successful move to Cloakham Lawn.

Mr and Mrs Hall were also involved in Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s chicken promotion at Millwey Rise which was televised and attracted national publicity.

Mr Hall made an impression at the recent public meeting on Axminster’s requirements in the new Local Plan being adopted by East Devon District Council.

At that meeting he delivered an impassioned plea for the young people of Axminster to be put first and received a rousing round of applause.

Mr Hall told The Weekender: “I am proud to have been co-opted onto Axminster Town Council to represent the Weycroft Ward and I will do my best to champion the cause of all those who live and work in the Millwey Rise area.

“With two children aged 15 and 12, I am of course keen to promote better facilities for the young people of Axminster with the emphasis on jobs and housing for local people.

“Everything about Axminster is ifs and buts, if we get a by-pass, etc. We need to live in the now and I would like to see Axminster going all out to attract businesses, making the town attractive for them.

“I would like to see a mini-Eden at Webster’s Garage, creating a pleasant area to sit out and a place where we can source local produce, fruit and veg.

“We have fantastic schools in Axminster and we are fortunate to have a railway station which I think will play an increasing role in the economic viability of our town in the future.”
