17th February 2012AXMINSTER: Axminster school praised for English teaching
AN Axe Valley primary school has won praise from education inspectors for the quality of its English teaching.
Inspectors from the school standards agency, Ofsted, visited Axminster Community Primary School to look at all its work in English.
And lead inspector Ann Henderson says the school’s achievement in English, quality of English teaching, the curriculum and the effectiveness of leadership and management in the subject are all good.
“Pupils’ progress across the school is good,” she said.
“Pupils enjoy English lessons. Teachers make good use of assessment data and plan their lessons well.
“The curriculum is well planned to ensure that it is broad, balanced and meets the needs and interests of all pupils.
“Theatre visits and wider opportunities are regularly planned to enhance pupils’ learning experiences and provide an effective stimulus for learning. Reading for pleasure is promoted well.”
Ms Henderson says the effectiveness of leadership and management in English is good.
“There is a common commitment to high standards and driving improvement,” she said.
The Ofsted inspectors say the visit provided valuable information, which will contribute to the agency’s national evaluation and reporting.
Headteacher Tony Harvell said: “This was a most forensic examination of the teaching and learning of English in our school by an experienced HMI.
“In this context, to receive the judgment of ‘good’ was particularly pleasing and a credit to the staff of the school in their drive to raise standards and to the children for their commitment and hard work.”
