10th February 2012HONITON: Children choose play equipment design
HONITON schoolchildren have chosen a design for new play equipment in the town.
Honiton Town Council is working with East Devon District Council (EDDC) to provide children with the new piece of play equipment at Allhallows play area.
Honiton Town Councillor, David Foster, and EDDC’s Community Engagement and Funding Officer, Jamie Buckley, visited Honiton Primary School and asked 113 reception and year one children to look at designs for four multi-use pieces of play equipment for children under the age of seven, and then to vote for their favourite one.
The winner, with 46 per ent of all votes, included a slide, a step bridge and a tunnel. Endorsement of the results now rests with Honiton Town Council.
Funding
£5,000 of the money for this equipment has been accumulated from recent Honiton housing developments to spend on play (Section 106 money).
When Honiton Town Council asked local parents how they would like to improve the play area with this funding, they found that a larger piece of equipment for younger children was needed.
Honiton Town Council has contributed £700 and EDDC is providing £7,500 from its StreetScene budget for capital works to play areas.
EDDC has a policy of allocating Section 106 money for sport and play through involving the community and letting them decide what they want to spend the money on.
Councillor Foster said: “I would like to thank both staff and children for their enthusiasm. I hope the children get enjoyment, not just from playing on the new equipment, but also a sense of excitement that comes from seeing their selected piece of equipment in situ and the sense of pride I hope this brings with it.”
