SIDMOUTH: Police target speeding drivers

POLICE used covert equipment to record speeding vehicles throughout Sidmouth.

The device was just one of those used to monitor vehicle speeds as police reacted to residents complaints.

A Laser guided hand held Radar device and an Illuminated Speed Detection Sign were used by police officers.

Several residents contacted the Police in 2011, voicing concerns over the speed of vehicles using certain roads in the town, said Sidmouth Police’s Sergeant Andrew Turner

Sergeant Turner said: “Speeding is a contributory factor in many road accidents. The higher the speed the more likelihood of serious injury and severe damage to property.

“Officers take all complaints very seriously. Sidmouth is not immune to road accidents and poor driving.

“The recording devices used were mainly used in a covert manner to give a true and accurate result.”

In as many cases the complainant was offered to attend and witness the procedure alongside police.

Some of this work was carried out in partnership with Devon County Highways.

The roads monitored included: Sid Road at Fortescue, the Junction with Sidgard Road and Redwood Road.

Also Sidford High Street and Cotford Road, Sidbury, were monitored.
