2nd February 2012DORCHESTER: Jean keeps on knitting
Dorchester Magna resident, Jean Wilson, who is celebrating her 70th birthday this Friday (February 3rd), is an avid charity knitter and the housing association are sending out a plea for spare yarn to help Jean continue her hobby.
Taught to knit at the age of five on a pair of six inch nails, ends blunted by her mum, Jean had an interesing childhood growing up in the East End of London.
She enjoys many crafts including tapestry, cross stitch, embroidery, crochet and she makes cards.
She trained as a seamstress, specialising in ladies’ suiting and wedding dresses and her skills have been put to excellent use along the years.
Jean ensured her talents were used well with her whole family being clothed by her own fair hand.
Now her talents are turned to knitting to help clothe children in Africa and the temporary residents of the premature baby unit in Dorset County Hospital.
Both charities have received various blankets, toys, hats, mitts, scarves from Jean.
Jean doesn’t only knit because she enjoys helping people, it also keeps her young.
She said: “Knitting and crochet also keeps my hands mobile and holds back the pain of the dreaded arthritis.”
If anybody would like to donate any unwanted wool or yarn (ideally double knit) to enable Jean to continue with her charity knitting, donations can be made to Jane Fisher of Magna Housing Association by calling (01305) 216125.
