2nd February 2012DORCHESTER: Crime continues to fall
Crime in Dorchester continues to fall according to local police Inspector Les Fry.
He said that violent offences have fallen by 21 per cent since April; burglary by 12 per cent, sexual offences by six per cent and anti-social behaviour was also down.
“It is good news for all of us,” he told town councillors at their last meeting.
Other figures include a four per cent drop in criminal damage and burglary of non-domestic properties down by six per cent.
Anti-social behaviour reports fell by 13.5 per cent in Dorchester South and 1.2 per cent in Dorchester North – figures which equate to 410 incidents since April in Dorchester South and 49 in Dorchester North.
Inspector Fry said driving behaviour had also been targeted in the month and a one-day operation had seen 32 fixed penalty tickets issued – nine for using a mobile phone at the wheel and two for not being in proper control of a vehicle for other reasons.
He said one driver had continued to use a mobile phone at the wheel while four officers were next to him and had then driven off, still using his phone.
Mr Fry announced that the town would soon follow the example of Bridport and introduce a restorative justice scheme where offenders are brought together with their victims in an attempt to tackle their behaviour.
