2nd February 2012DORSET: Council launch sign language information films
Deaf people in Dorset are being offered the chance to find out about council services in the county with the help of new information films.
A total of 21 new sign language films have been launched giving information about vital services like recycling, planning and schools.
They can be seen on the dorsetforyou.com website.
The project, which was led by West Dorset District Council, began after the Dorset Equality Partnership identified that more needed to be done to help deaf people access council services.
The district council worked with a charity that supports deaf people, to create the films.
Sonus helped identify what information should be featured in the films and translated the scripts into British Sign Language (BSL).
Paul Kirby, Sonus Community Development and Co-ordination Manager, said: “We are delighted to have been part of this project, which provides access to the council’s website, allowing deaf BSL users to access information on council services in their first or preferred language.”
