2nd February 2012WEYMOUTH: Old railway line gets facelift to improve safety for cyclists
PART of Weymouth’s old through-town railway line could be filled in to improve safety for cyclists.
The measure is included in £387,000 EU funding being given to Dorset County Council for a new cycle route linking Dorset with France to help boost cross-Channel cycle tourism through the Cycle West project.
The 220-mile Petit Tour De Manche will stretch from Cherbourg and St Malo to Jersey, Weymouth, Dorchester and Poole with the Weymouth part of the route linking with the Condor ferry terminal.
Part of the work will fill in the railway lines between Custom House Quay and Westham Bridge to stop cyclists getting their wheels caught between the lines and also to cut the risk of machines skidding on the slippery metal surface.
Cyclists had a chance to put their views forward on the route idea at a public exhibition in Weymouth Library.
Among those who visited the exhibition was Preston cyclist Simon Roaf who said he thought the new cycle route was a very good idea.
He added: “I am involved with Explorer Scouts for 14 to 18-year-olds and tackling a cycle route like this over to France and back to Dorset would be ideal for them becaue it would go towards their expedition badge.”
