DORSET FOOTBALL: Quarter final shock for Islanders

Improvement - but Weymouth beaten at Oxford City

Saturday, January 21st

S&W Counties Championship

Mick Parry Memorial Trophy – Semi Final (at Portland United FC)

Dorset U18 0 Devon 1

THE DORSET under 18s squad (Including Dorchester Town duo Aston Butcher and Will Gape and Matt Harvey, Charlie Holland and Jamie Perry from Weymouth), crashed out of the Mick Parry Memorial Trophy at the semi-final stage , losing by the only goal of the game at a very windy New Grove Corner.

Dorset played the first-half with the strong wind in their faces, however you would not have known as Dorset had far more possession and chances, whilst limiting Devon to two shots in the first-half.

Oscar Tilley was the first to threaten the Devon goal, his header from Dan Way’s left wing cross just going over the bar.

On 18 minutes Sam Bayston cut in from the right before sending a shot narrowly wide of the post.

Prior to the interval Will Gape should have done better with a free header, the same player though was unlucky to see a powerful shot brilliantly saved by Rob Powell in the visitors’ goal, five minutes later.

The wind eased slightly in the second-half but Dorset continued on the offensive, Satterly, Tilley and Way all went close for the hosts, Way hitting the bar direct from a corner kick.

In the 67th minute Devon took the lead when Barnstaple Town’s Billy Tucker was impeded in the area. The same player made no mistake from the spot slotting home what proved to be the winner.

Oxford City 2 Weymouth 0

Southern Premier

Attendance: 260

AFTER a dismal performance at Evesham last week, Weymouth gave a much better display against fourth placed Oxford City and will feel with a bit of luck they may have taken a point from this encounter.

Having picked up ground over the festive period with 10 points from four games, Weymouth then lost touch with the top half of the table following defeats against two of the sides in the lower half of the Evo-Stik South Premier League, and as a result of the Evesham defeat received a tongue-lashing from boss Brendan King.

His words appeared to have been taken on board as first Matt Groves fired just wide and Craig Duff brought a save from City keeper Jason Mooney as the Terras were first to find their feet.

However Nick Jordan soon had to be alert to save at Pablo Haysham’s feet before producing a sharp save from Declan Benjamin.

Chances were few, but on 38 minutes Weymouth had a let-off when Chris Wilmott struck a post from James Clark’s free kick with Jordan beaten.

As in the first half, Weymouth started the more positive after the break and when Mooney denied Sam Poole from close range, Marvin Martin headed Ben Gerring’s effort from the rebound off the line.

However it was Oxford that broke the deadlock when Jordan was unable to get to Mark Bell’s swinging corner, and Wilmott headed home from close in.

Six minutes later they doubled their lead when Andy Ballard’s scuffed shot from the edge of the area appeared to take a deflection to send it beyond Jordan and effectively close the game out.

Weymouth tried to respond in the final 15 minutes but they rarely troubled the home defence.

Assistant manager Matt Groves told View Sport: “We were much more solid on Saturday.

“I wouldn’t say we were dynamic going forward, but it was a much more solid performance.

“It was an unfortunate time to concede a goal for which we were quite disappointed about, and the second one was going wide but got a deflection into the bottom corner. We’re not having a lot of luck at the moment, but I think we would have been good enough to have held on for what would have been a good point. But it wasn’t to be.

“Sam Poole had a shot just after half-time and the keeper’s made a decent save, but if that had gone in I think we would have been in a good position. It just seems at the moment that we are not having a lot of luck at either end and we are just being punished.

“But that’s the way it goes sometimes, and over the course of a season you can’t have it all your own way. We’ve just got to dig in and hope we come out the other side as quickly as possible.”

The Terras were due to play Stourbridge on Tuesday.
