BEAMINSTER: Enjoyable evening for camera club

At the Beaminster and District Camera Club’s second meeting of 2012 Penny Piddock of Dorchester Camera Club, judged two print competitions.

She began by saying that she wished to share her thinking in making her assessments with the members of the club and that she felt that this was possible with such a friendly audience.

The evening was enlivened by Penny asking the audience if they had reached similar conclusions as to the winning photographs and useful discussions ensued.

In the Open Competition (any subject) the winner was Roy Moore with a delightful image of a Large White butterfly gathering nectar from a Red Campion flower.  Second with a dramatic photograph of a red sports car bonnet, was Tim O’Donoghue and third was Joan Hickinbottom’s “Runner”.

The topic for the special subject competition was “Entrance(s)” which attracted some colourful and intriguing entries.

The winner was Ken Ovenden’s “The East Door”, a study of an open door framed by a climbing shrub. Second was Marjorie Aird’s “Sunny Entrace” where the judge remarked on the success the photographer had with retaining detail in the white washed walls. Third was a shot of the huge entrance to Padirac Cave in the Dordogne by Tesa Safadi.

A very enjoyable evening was concluded by a warm vote of thanks to the judge for her helpful and analytical comments on all the photographs. For the most part the audience agreed with her decisions!

Attention is drawn to a talk by Doctor John Bebbington on February 21st, on close-up and macro photography.

The meeting will be held in Beaminster Sports Pavilion starting at 7.30pm and is open to the public.

The speaker is an acknowledged expert wildlife photographer and is sure to give plenty of useful tips on capturing interesting images.

Admission is by ticket costing £3.50 obtainable by contacting Roy Moore (tel.01308 863955) or the club chairman.

For more information about the club contact the club chairman, Tessa Safadi, on 01935 891068 or visit the website www.beaminstercameraclub.co.uk.
