Bournemouth 3rd 1 Beaminster 4
AFTER the disappointment of the previous week, Beaminster Ladies hockey team bounced back with a fantastic team performance to peg back league leaders Swanage & Wareham, who crashed to their first home defeat of the season to Gillingham.
Having gone into the New Year top of West Clubs Women's Hockey League Channel Division One, Beaminster lost to the East Dorset side and were then held to a draw by Yeovil and Sherborne 2nd’s in a lack lustre display , and so it was important they got back to winning ways.
They began the game in determined mood and had the majority of the play and took the lead through Danni Donovan who scored with a rising shot that crossed the line at backboard height.
Bournemouth did manage to break out on occasions but they found keeper Phoebe Stewart once again in good form, and eventually conceded a second when Izzy Davies scored. She struck the ball straight from the injection of a short corner from the top of the D completely throwing the home keeper.
Beaminster continued to dictate at the start of the second half and had several opportunities to add to their total before Bournemouth enjoyed their best passage of the game; forcing several short corners but unable to convert any of them.
Beaminster made the game safe when a good move started by Lucy Timbrell saw Donovan make a run to set up Davies to score from the top of the D for their third.
Bournemouth finally got some reward for a spirited display when they scored from a break, but Beaminster sealed victory when Davies completed her hat-trick with another first time strike from a short corner routine.
The weekend’s results now see Beaminster only trailing by one point with Gillingham three points behind in third with a game in hand.
Players-of-the-Match: Izzy Davies and Toni Aplin.
Beaminster: Stewart, Hughes, Craddock, Andrews, Aplin, White, Donovan, Crawford, Girling, Davies, Timberell.
