1st February 2012WEST BAY SEA ANGLING: Dad beats son in New Years Day duel
HUGH Rathbone started 2012 in fine style by winning the New Years Day match beating son Steven into second place.
Hugh’s haul of six dogfish and two pout weighing 4690grms was too much for Steven (4300grms) with Lea Windsor (4260grms) a very close third.
Thirteen anglers, including one guest, had to contend with heavy rain for most of the match, and fishing was patchy.
Those that fished in front of the car park caught very little whilst those that walked towards the cottages found plenty of dogfish to make up the weights whilst a few pout and whiting made up the catches.
Ragworm tipped with mackerel proved to be best bait.

High tide was at 8.41pm, whilst mackerel and lugworm were the best bait on the night.

Steve Harwood went one better after finishing second in the first Thursday match, by winning the second one with five dogfish in his haul of 3800grms.
Eighteen members fished on a night a strong cold westerly wind which made fishing very difficult and, with a falling tide, finding fish wasn’t easy.
Only a few whiting were caught with some members failing to catch any which suggests the next few months will be slow.
Lee Sherry was second with three dogfish, whilst Hugh Rathbone did find a plump codling of 1280grms(2.82lb) to finish third.
1st: Steve Harwood 3800grms 5 dogfish. 2nd: Lee Sherry 2195grms 3 dogfish 1 whiting. 3rd: Hugh Rathbone 2080grms 1 cod 1 dogfish 1 whiting. Heaviest fish pool: Hugh Rathbone codling 1280grms. Species Pool: P J Wheeler (2).
