PERRY STREET LEAGUE: Pedigree hounds chase down John Fowler cup

Thursday, January 26th

JOHN FOWLER CUP FINAL (at Bridport)

Luso-Chard 2 Waytown Hounds 4

WITH over 120 people watching at Bridport’s St Mary’s ground, Waytown Hounds got off to the perfect start after just 60 seconds when Tom Menaldino found Matt Read on the left hand side of the penalty area, Read proceeded to bend a superb right shot around the Luso ‘keeper and into the net,

But the Somerset side were back on level terms after 15 minutes when a mix-up at the back allowed Polish striker Artur Jacaszak to fire home.

The Hounds restored the lead on the half-hour when captain Steve White played a perfectly weighted pass through to Danny Dunford who hammered a right foot shot into corner.

But the goal of the match arrived 10 minutes after the restart when a good team move allowed Edd Stephenson to cross for Menaldino who teed himself up with his left foot before picking out the top right corner with his right.

Luso would not lie down and after a spell of pressure Tom Rutland unluckily diverted a Jacaczak shot into this own net to reduce the arrears to 3-2.

But with 15 minutes left on the clock, Read slid the ball though to Menaldino and left with a tight one-on-one opportunity he powered the ball through the keeper and into the net.

Afterwards Waytown player-manager Mark Hughes said: “It would be harsh to pick a Man-of-the-Match with every player giving everything in fantastic team effort.

“I would like to thank the Perry Street League and Bridport Football Club for laying on a fantastic evening, we will never forget what was a huge night in the club’s history.”

CHALLENGE CUP – QF

Beaminster 2 Ilminster Reserves 3

TWO Dave Penn goals couldn’t save Beaminster from crashing out of the competition as they saw a 2-1 half-time lead overturned by the battling Blues with veteran Craig Rice, Chris Bussell and Mike Whitfield, his eighth of the season, bagging the goals.

Crewkerne 4 Farway United 2

CREWKERNE recovered from losing both full-backs, Barry Hayne and Ash Larcombe through injury inside 15 minutes to earn a place in the semi-finals.

Lee Banks gave the hosts a slender half-time lead before Ben Williams levled for Farway early in the second-half.

But Harry Charles, substitute Adam Swinnerton and top-scorer Ed Butcher put daylight between them and the visitors.

The Devonians pulled back a late consolation through Andy Diamond.

Lyme Regis 8 Combe Res 0

LYME Regis eased through to a semi-final against Ilminster Town Reserves as they brushed Combe Reserves aside with a first-half masterclass that yielded six goals.

Midfielder Steve Batey opened the flood gates with his 15th goal of the season and once Mark Bailey rounded off a clever five-pass move with a precise low finish the writing was on the wall for the sorry Saints.

Adam Caddy took his tally for the season to 17 with the third before top-scorer Joe Bond got in on the act.

Defender Matt Laing headed home number five and Bond completed the first-half rout.

Bond completed his fifth hat-trick of the season soon after the restart and Bailey rounded-off another fine team move for the eighth as Combe suffered their biggest defeat in almost five years.

South Petherton 2 Perry Street 0

PERRY Street had a day to forget as they not only crashed out of the Challenge Cup but also ended the day with 10 men for the last 25 minutes and with two men in hospital nursing potentially long-term leg injuries.

Goalkeeper Mike Barry suffered a knee cartilage injury in the warm-up and looks set to be out for several weeks.

Mothers’ Player-manager Ian Hilton took over between the sticks but was powerless to prevent Dean Smith  scoring both goals which booked Pethy a home semi-final with Crewkerne Town.

Street’s afternoon got even worse in the second-half as Danny Wiseman had a penalty saved by Magpies’ ‘keeper James Smith and Ryan Mason suffered a broken fibula.

Semi-Final draw; South Petherton v Crewkerne Town, Lyme Regis v Ilminster Town Reserves.

KENNY HODGES CUP – QF

Lyme Bantams 6 Hawkchurch Res 2

PETE Peacock broke the individual scoring record for the Lyme Regis Bantams’ side as his gorged his way to a double hat-trick with all six goals against Hawkchurch United Reserves.

Peacock opened the scoring after 19 seconds when he latched onto a free-kick from skipper Jimmy Larcombe before curling home a  25-yarder in the top-corner.

Peacock added number two with a shot that took a slight deflection off a Hawks’ defender and completed his first hat-trick with a neat header.

Defender Danny Parr unluckily had a spectacular overhead kick ruled out for offside

But it wasn’t long before Peacock made it 4-0 when he tapped home from close range after Larcombe’s weaving run ended with a shot that hit both posts but stayed out.

The second-half began with Larcombe grazing the outside of a post with a penalty after a handball incident.

At the other end a handball from Rob Greenwood allowed Steve Harding to reduce the arrears to 4-1 with a successful spot-kick.

Peacock cut in from the left wing to smash home number five before Jack Larcombe’s corner-kick deceived Lyme ‘keeper Rob Thom.

Lyme player-manager Chris Simpson was twice denied by the woodwork but the scoring was completed late-on when Ben Strong picked out Peacock who netted with a first time effort for his 32nd Bantams’ goal of the season.

u Semi-Final draw (March 17th); Thorncombe Reserves v Ilminster Town A, Lyme Regis Bantams v Crewkerne Rangers Reserves.

DIVISION ONE

Netherbury 2 Lyme Regis Res 0

Netherbury took the spoils in this hard fought contest against Lyme Regis Reserves to make it two wins on the bounce.

Early on the Ambers looked dangerous down the flanks, but, with Lyme playing three across the midfield, it made a passing game tricky.

Lyme ‘keeper Will Meech made a good save from a dipping shot from the left flank, but the best chance in the first-half fell to Ali Kamara, who was through one-on-one after a slip by Wallace Blackmore, only to fluff his shot.

The second-half could not have started better for the hosts with Kamara making up for his earlier miss, with an excellent chip to opening the scoring in the 47th minute. Soon after James Sayers had a great run and shot which crashed against the crossbar.

The game remained tight, with Lyme taking more possession but it was the Ambers who edged it with a late second goal from Lee Quincey, his first for the club.

"It was great for us to get another win, it wasn't pretty at times, but the result was all important," said Chairman Dave Symonds.

Lyme player-manager Gerard Hitchcock, who had a 20 minute run-out following knee surgery, picked out central midfielders Rhys Paterson and Patryk Skibinski, up from the Bantams, as his top performers on a day when his side created very little.

Netherbury are sad to announce the passing of long-serving Club President Brian Richards.

“He was a fantastic servant to the club and will be sorely missed. Everyone at the club would like to pass on their condolences to his family," said a club spokesman.

Perry Street Res 0 Millwey Rise 10

TERRY Emmett (3) and Sam Dibling (2) took their goalscoring partnership up to 59 as Millwey put double figures past Perry Street Reserves for the second time this season.

DIVISION TWO

Pymore 10 Hinton 0

STRIKER Tim Hussey scored the first and last goals as Pymore pummeled Hinton to the tune of 10-0 at St Mary’s.

Hussey went on to net six, including one penalty, as Pymore, who led 6-0 at the turnaround strolled to victory. Gary Corry, Dean Obstancias, Tom Gale and 16-year-old substitute Jamie Whitby completed the carnage with goalkeeper Mark Tozer a mere spectator for much of the afternoon.

Uplyme 5 Chard Rangers 0

UPLYME jumped two places to fifth in the Division Two table with an impressive 5-0 win over Chard Rangers at Venlake.

Adam Neale put the Swallows ahead in the fifth minute when he met Sam Jones’ cross to net at the second attempt after his initial effort had been saved.

James Beddows doubled the lead and Jones struck an upright before the interval and the hosts never looked back.

Gavin Fowler picked out midfielder Steve Gillan who guided home the third on the hour.

Uplyme manager Rob Coombe then introduced Chris Matthews who has been impressing for the club’s Reserve team of late.

And Matthews was to make quite an impact scoring twice, and on another day could have bagged four, in a 25-minute cameo.

Coombe felt full-back Tom Chappell was worth a mention in an excellent all-round team showing.
