Big crowd at carnival finale

By Tom Glover

A week of carnival events came to a fitting climax on Saturday evening with the grand carnival procession.

An estimated 12,000 people were in the town to watch the firework display that marked the end of a week packed with family events.

The week had begun in wet weather but by the weekend things had started to brighten up and the crowds turned out in force for the carnival finale.

The procession, consisting mainly of walking enries,  was not as big as usual but those taking part put in a real effort and kept the crowds entertained with their creative designs.

Some particular highlights were “Almo the Mighty” with his display of weightlifting during the procession and the individual children’s entries with floats designed by Nicola Spiller, and being paraded by Kelsey Ellis and Dylan Summers, coming in first and second.

There were also some great efforts from the groups with Ghostbusters, Grease and Cowboys and Indians all making an appearance.

The procession was the perfect end to the week’s events and chairman of the Regatta and Carnival committee Teresa Evemy said: “It has been a very special nine days with the carnival spirit being shown by many, many people. The lovely weather at the end of this week enabled us to complete nearly all our events and involve more people than ever before.

“The highlight must be the procession which, although smaller than in previous years, showed a quality and ingenuity that reflects the people in our town.”

Winners: Business and Trade – Rinky Tinks; Walking Business and trade – Lyme Regis Hotel and Restaurant Association; Groups and Societies – Lyme Regis Pantomime Society; Individual Adult – Brenda Tancock with Night and Day; Groups of Children - Ben Blackmore and Cameron Fowler with Chicken Run; Individual Children – Kelsey Ellis with Sugar and Spice.
