BRIDPORT: Green-fingered rivalry at school

By Tom Glover

KNOWLEDGEABLE students from The Sir John Colfox School impressed the Transition Town Bridport group last week at their inter-house gardening competition.

The four house teams were each given two grow-bags, a few starter plants and £5 to buy seedlings or seeds. They were then tasked with growing edible plants and preparing presentations on why they chose their plants and how they can be prepared.

The winning team were Adler House who used some of their money to buy marigolds, both as edible flowers but also as an aphid repellent.

Team leader Ryan Smith explained the importance of using nature’s way to control pests biologically. For their efforts the team won house points and vouchers to buy more plants.

Hinomaru House, led by Serena, Matt and Lindsey, were also highly commended by the judges.

The competition, organised by Bridport Transitioner’s Amanda Copp, Elizabeth Friend and Sarah Wilberforce, was supported by head of house Bernard O’Brien.

The winners prizes were awarded by mayoress Anne Rickard, with Colfox governors represented by the chairman Clive Bath.

A separate prize was also awarded on the day to Bridport Young Transitioner of the Year Ellie Holt. Ellie had impressed the judges with her sustained commitment to the school’s Eco-club, which included running the “Food of Love” stall outside the Bridport Arts Centre in May.
