3rd July 2009Reward for return of stolen benches
By Philip Evans
A £100 reward is being offered for information that may lead to the recovery of stolen benches from the Davey Fort football ground in Lyme Regis.
Six new picnic tables, which were delivered flat-packed on a palette and wrapped in celophane, were ordered over the internet by Lyme Regis Football Club at a cost of £500.
The club were particularly keen to get the benches in place before their main fundraising event of the summer - a fun day on Sunday, July 12th.
The benches were delivered to the Davey Fort field in the early part of last week and unloaded onto the car park.
The palette was still in place on Thursday evening of last week when committee members met to discuss plans for the fun day.
But they were missing the following evening when the club’s junior section held their presentation evening.
A neighbour heard the club gate being opened around 11 pm on Thursday night. The matter was immediately reported to Lyme Regis Police who said they would add the incident to their national database in the hope that this might generate leads.
Club chairman Howard Larcombe told the View from Lyme Regis: “Whoever stole the benches must have known they were there. The wrapping was taken off and they were removed from the palette.
“Our fundriasing committee have worked hard over the past few months to raise the money to buy the new picnic tables in time for our fun day.”
Anyone who has any information about the theft should contact Lyme Regis Police Station.
