2nd June 2011DORCHESTER: Transition Town celebrates third brithday
Transition Town Dorchester has just celebrated its third birthday with an outdoor party and AGM.
Thirty members gathered at one of the group’s food and land projects, the Railway Community Orchard behind Monmouth Road, to celebrate.
New chairman Len Herbert took over from Bill North, with Jenny Shackleford and Judy Edwards remaining as secretary and treasurer.
Eight successful projects have been launched so far by the group, and the meeting agreed that the next step is to register Transition Town Dorchester as a not-for-profit company.
The Transition Town aims to help Dorchester prepare for and adjust to the shocks created by oil shortages and climate change, as the world makes its transition to a way of life with less reliance on fossil fuels.
To make this work in practice, Transition Town Dorchester has set up eight projects to support people buying or growing healthy local food, choosing lower-carbon ways to travel, and reducing energy use at home.
Practical outcomes have included a community farm at Poundbury, the community orchard in central Dorchester, a garden-sharing network, a local cycling and walking guide, and a loan and advice scheme for home energy savers.
The group welcomes anyone from Dorchester and surrounding villages who would like to get involved.
There are regular work sessions at the community orchard and community farm, with vegetable growing, fruit trees, a poly tunnel and a poultry project.
Shared meals and social breaks also provide a forum for discussion, and new project ideas are always welcome. Anyone interested should contact Jenny Shackleford on 07760 313305.
