5th May 2011DORCHESTER: Sun shines on annual church fair
By Anita Harries
The sun shone down on Fordington Green as St George’s Church in Dorchester held their annual fair.
This year the event was opened by popular actor, writer and director Lord Fellowes of West Stafford, accompanied by his wife Emma, Lady Fellowes.
Knowledgeable as ever, Lord Fellowes gave a brief history of St George’s Church and the connection between Fordington and his home village of West Stafford before declaring the fair well and truly open.
A basket of flowers in the shape of a St George’s cross was then presented to Lady Fellowes by Sunday School member Ellie Greening.
And as in previous years, the magnificent Master of Ceremonies was one Allan Knott, complete with his terrible jokes competition.
Entertainment was provided by two dance groups. The Dorchester Ballet and Dance Club again gave excellent account of themselves with displays by their jazz, street dance, and performance classes. And a different dance form altogether came from the Historical Dancers with their elegant costumes and equally elegant moves.
The Durnovaria Silver Band played on the green and the Harmonious Funk Choir sang inside the church.
There were trips to the bell ringing chamber, and the inside of the church also housed displays by the Dorset County Museum, Rethink and the Independent Carers Forum, Tools with a Mission, and Dorchester Stitchers.
The Safer Neighbourhood Team were on hand to help and advise, and demonstrate the art of finger printing.
Outside there was much to amuse, entertain, and give good cause to part with your money.
Books, bric-a-brac, traidcraft, jewellery, toiletries, toys, craft stalls, cakes and a superb range of jams, marmalades and chutneys joined raffles, tombolas, and some fun games to tempt the money from your purse and into the church coffers.
